On Saturday, March 26th, 2022, we will leave the CHAS Rachel House children’s hospice in Fife, Scotland, at the start of a two-year (‘ish) cycle around the planet. We are doing this in support of Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) and the Hospicices of Hope Ukraine Appeal.
If the cycle itself isn’t challenging enough, we intend to continue a blog about our adventures around the planet, with plenty of photographs. So that you can join us on this journey of a lifetime, a journey that few are crazy enough to embark on, we plan to keep Facebook and Instagram updated every step of the way.
We understand not everyone can afford to donate to charity, and even if you can, you may already be doing so to a charity of your choosing. So if you aren’t able to donate to Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) or Hospices of Hope Ukraine Appeal, then please consider simply sharing a link to this page with your friends and family to help us raise awareness.
Many thanks
Bob & Deborah Gulliver

Our Journey and Current Location
We have our Garmin InReach tracker turned on when we are cycling. InReach allows you to see where we are in the world, is updated every two minutes, and has a satellite message capability so we can be contacted regardless of the availability of a mobile phone network. It also has an SOS button should things go pear-shaped in the middle of nowhere!
Our Supporters
Financial Sponsorship – Britsail is a Royal Yacht Association training centre operating out of Kip Marina on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland… Okay, it’s our own company, but it supports us by paying for our InReach satellite and mobile services and gives us time off to do these crazy things.
Technical Support – GM4X provides services that enable outdoor access for everyone with any ability. The company manufactures the Paratreker All Terrain Wheelchair in the UK and is also a sales agent for Triobike.
Hase Pino Tandem Support – Based in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales village of Gargrave, JD Tandems have created a dynamic and relaxing environment in which to purchase a new tandem or to see if tandem riding is for you.
Garmin InReach Support – Based in Northumberland, in the North East of England, GPS Training is the largest independent retailer of Outdoor GPS units and the largest GPS trainer in the country, delivering courses nationwide and online.
Mark Beaumont BEM holds the record for cycling around the world, completing his 18,000-mile (29,000 km) route on 18 September 2017, having taken less than 79 days. It was reading Mark”s book, The Man Who Cycled the World, from his first two-wheeled circumnavigation back in 2008 that sowed the seeds of our cycle around the planet.
Best wishes for a great adventure! I am about ready for my cross US journey later this year. Thanks for your advice!
Thanks John. Good luck on your US adventure. We loved our 70 days on the road from Chicago to LA to San Francisco. Make sure you spend time to chat to people… there are some wonderful, crazy and kind individuals out there!!
I’m really excited to follow your trip!
Thanks Lisa. We will be doing our best to take everyone who follows us along on the journey. The blogs are easier than the vlogs, but I’m sure we will figure it all out!
Hi Deborah & Bob,
I look forward to following your journey. I looked you up after seeing you on the TV news!
I like the interesting recumbent. I would love to try one. Hope borders/countries open up for you in time.
I’m departing May, UK -Australia. I’m planning to ride via Turkey, northern Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, etc. Fortunately I have an Aussie passport (and UK) for Iran travel. Maybe see you somewhere en route. You should not be hard to miss with your set up! Ride safe. Regards, Alan.
Thanks Alan. Our pre-COVID tour was Chicago to LA (Route 66) then up to San Francisco on our individual Koga Randonneurs. Believe me, this bike is about 50% more work for me and 50% less for Deborah, although she will never admit to it! LOL
I wish we could take the Iran & Turkmenistan route, but no chance with a UK passport, so it’s Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, then across the Capsian Sea to Kazakstan. We will be using an InReach, with a link on our website, so you will be able to see where we are and even message us via satellite. If there is a chance of our paths crossing somewhere through Europe or Turkey (I can only guess you will be much faster then we will be) then let’s try to make it happen. Our plans are to be in Athens by mid-June, then through Turkey by late July’ish!
Are you posting anything of your adventures online?
Safe travels
Well done both of you, you’ve make it to your first stopover.
You have perfect weather for your first night under canvas.
Take care and all the best.
Thanks Fraser and thanks again for being there to see us off. Sorry, we didn’t have much time in the craziness of the morning to chat for long. Enjoy then sailing and call in from time to time to see how we are doing…. and many thanks for the kind donation!
Will be looking forward to trip details as you settle in now.
Very interested to hear how the bike is working in terms of challenges, effort required, packing/unpacking, etc.
Hello John. I’m going to leave it another few weeks to allow things to settle down. I could write an essay on the bike and gear now, but some of the comments may be unfair, requiring me to backtrack. In a few more weeks, maybe when we take our 5-day break to celebrate Debprah’s 50th in Prague, I will be able to share exactly what I think about this crap bike! 😉
Dear both, passed by yesterday in the beautiful Main river valley on my trip to Munich. What a pity it was so cold and cloudy, you were so brave! I wish you all the best for your adventure and hope you will enjoy the beautiful German landscape with better weather the next days. I will definitely follow your trip and maybe we meet again.Best regards Paul
Hello Paul, Many thanks for your message and kind donation. It is ironic that the best weather we have had so far on the tour is in our home country of Scotland, but I am sure before too much longer we will be looking forward to cooler days when the European summer shows what it is capable of as we head south. We did enjoy the German landscape and the hospitality of the locals. We didn’t have enough time to spend in Germany as we would have liked, as we needed to be in Prague to celebrate Deborah’s birthday, but we will definitely be back when we have finished the cycle tour… although next time it will be in a campervan! Kind regards Bob & Deborah
Im so sorry I was working Orkney when you road past in NRW otherwise I would have popped down on the bike to say hello – please feel free to try the SMS system when you need to 🙂
No problem. We can use our phones as if we are in the UK until Athens, but l will give the satellite messenger a try tomorrow. I hope all is well.
Inspiring! Your website, “The Gullivers Travel” is a true testament to the idea that life is too short not to live your dream. Your travel stories and photographs truly capture the beauty and adventure of exploring new places. I will definitely be following your journey and looking forward to more updates. Keep living your dream and inspiring others to do the same.
Sorry for my very delayed response. Many thanks for your message. We just get up each day with the intention of making the most of it, which usually results in adventure. We do hope we are convincing at least a few that we watching us that life is indeed too short to get out there and make the most of it… How about you?
Interesting blogs. Nice combo bike. Good luck.
Thanks. It’s a challenging bike to cycle around the world, but we feel it’s worth it until we hit big hills or bits break on it 🤣
