Only 3 days before we will be sitting on a BA flight heading for Chicago.
While the planning of the entire route is far from done, we do have at least a semblance of a plan to guide us through the first 8 days, including a place to rest our heads each night. We are camping where we can, using motels only where there is no choice and using the warmshowers.org network where welcoming hosts are available.
warmshowers.org is a “global network of 85,000 members runs on goodwill and a ‘pay it forward’ philosophy, allowing riders to navigate the lonely and sometimes testing side of cycle touring and connect with kindred spirits“.
Today (Tuesday) is our last full day at home until December and our last day to sort out everything we can think of that needs hands-on to be sorted with both the house and our sailing business. On Wednesday morning we head up to Edinburgh to collect a hire car, before heading south, first to the North East of England to say good-bye to family, then down to Letchworth Garden City to stay overnight with our good friend, Mr Kevin Bacon. On Thursday morning we will be up bright and early to head to Heathrow, which is when the fun of manhandling two bikes packed in poly bags, a 23kg item of hold luggage and two pieces of hand luggage each really starts.
Our flight out of Heathrow is at 16:05, so hopefully plenty of time to deal with any inevitable hiccups and hopefully even more time to chill out before the flight.
All the best for your travels. Enjoy yourselves and post lots of pics too!
Thanks Ann… we have 2x GoPros, 1x Olympus Tough, 1x Samsung Gear 360, 3x Samsung S7s and 2x Samsung Tablets. We’ll likely take a photo or three on our travels and will be sure to post enough to bore you!
Never mind fair winds I wish you many tail winds on the wee cycle run on Route 66.
Thanks John. Tail winds would be good… very good! 🚴♀️🚴♂️🌬
